TIDE Conference Given New Meaning
The 2012 TIDE Conference Executive Committee is excited to announce that, in accordance with the continued expansion of the conference content, as well as the recent corporate name change of Interfaith Action to Youth LEAD (Youth Leaders Engaging Across Differences), the official meaning of the TIDE Conference acronym will be slightly altered. Beginning with the 2012 planning season, the TIDE acronym will now stand for Teenage Identity and Diversity Education. This is a shift from previous years, when the acronym instead represented Teenage Interfaith Diversity Education. The shift from interfaith to identity will allow Youth LEAD to expand the scope of topics covered within the conference and the audience the conference can reach, while continuing to include interfaith work and faith-based differences as an integral component of the discussions around identity that have formed the foundation of the TIDE Conference since its beginning.
The TIDE Executive Committee wishes you a wonderful and relaxing summer, and looks forward to seeing you at TIDE 2012! -
Lessons Learned while Planning an Interfaith Iftar
Youth LEAD Alumnus Reflects Upon Ramadan
Contributed by Dan ResnickWhat I remember most from my local synagogue is not sneaking out of services on Saturday mornings or the Rabbi’s address on Yom Kippur. No, my most memorable moment was observing dozens of Muslims praying in the synagogue yard, and then assembling to watch my Hindu friends dancing in the synagogue lobby, before we all retreated to the multi-purpose room for a kosher Iftar meal.

Abundant Table Overflows with Good Vibes
On the afternoon Friday, December 10th, a group of nine IFA YLP teens traveled to the Abundant Table Soup Kitchen in Norwood, MA to assist with preparing and serving the Friday evening meal. A small committee of teens coordinated the event. Last summer another group of IFA YLP’s teens donated the weekly harvest from a share of Moose Hill’s Community Supported Agriculture program to Abundant Table. Based on the new insights gained from these experiences, they are looking to develop long-term programming that explores the issues of suburban poverty and hunger in the local area.

Over eight percent of Massachusetts households experience some form of food insecurity—the degree to which an individual or family cannot obtain adequate nutritious food for a healthy life. Teens from Interfaith Action’s Youth Leadership Program want to change that equation on a local level, through taking leadership and educating themselves and the community-at-large about the issue.

The project was entirely planned by two IFA teens, Kevin and Divya, both of whom coordinated all of the logistics with Cradles to Crayons staff members and organized a team of ten IFA teens to visit the warehouse. -
Interfaith Action’s Teen Marketing Committee Produces Video for International Conference
Though Interfaith Action’s Executive Director Janet Penn will be flying across the Pacific solo, that doesn’t mean the Youth Leadership Program gets left behind! In preparation for her upcoming presentation at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Melbourne, Australia, two IFA teens were asked to prepare a video describing the interfaith work they have done and continue to do. The video contains images of some of IFA’s most exciting events from past years, as well as video footage from recent YLP meetings. The video can be found on youtube. Just one more way in which the local work of our teens is influencing the international interfaith realm!
